Irlens syndrome is a condition (believed to be connected to Dyslexia) where the brain is unable to process full spectral light. This can cause difficulty with visual distortion in the environment causing light sensitivity, headaches and discomfort when reading. And on the page where words can appear to blur, move and flicker, and coloured shadows can appear.

As someone living with Dyslexia and Irlens syndrome, Manning is interested to explore the possibilities of black ink on white. The process of repetitive mark making relates to previous works around childhood memories. Reminiscent of times when she and her brother, who is also dyslexic, would sit opposite one another for hours drawing and colouring in. Able to enjoy a shared activity where beyond there was no need for verbal communication or processing of language, the repetitive action and focus involved would create a meditative effect which was grounding and reassuring.
